Unlocking your potential (Part 1)
31. March 2006 by Othy.
Within each and every one of us lies an awesome potential to achieve whatever we set our minds to. To accomplish this, you must start from within. Let us agree on some fundamentals:
You are talented, clever, unique, and totally special. There’s no one else like you. No one has the combination of skills and aptitude that you have. You have an exclusive variety of inborn talents. List your skills and talents; write them out on paper.Look at those talents. Now use your imagination to explore how you could use them. Think beyond fitting into a job or paper qualifications. Focus on how those in-built abilities of yours could be put to good use. Think, ‘How can I provide valuable service?’ If you are a brilliant student, level-headed and calm in crisis, you don’t have to leave school and look for a job. Those skills could lead to all sorts of fascinating business possibilities.
Look around you at your immediate vicinity and beyond. What is the service that you could provide - brilliantly - that people would be delighted to have and pay for? What is the gap that you could fill, using all those skills and abilities of yours to the maximum? This is about you spending yourself well, fulfilling your potential to the fullest, and making the most of what you’ve got.
Don’t think, ‘What would be possible?’ Think, ‘What would be fabulous?’ Give yourself permission to try something great; what kind of lifestyle would you like? It’s probably not that farfetched, but entirely within your reach. You must allow yourself to get excited about life. This desire will propel you to push forward, stretch yourself to make a move, take a risk and get moving. Remember, the very pursuit of your dreams makes life more interesting and fulfilling.

Your hero lies within…
21. March 2006 by Othy.
I NEED A HERO! SEND ME AN ANGEL! NOW!’ Do these statements sound familiar? Yes? Then listen to what I have to say. Waiting for a hero to take you by the hand and lead you is choosing to remain a victim or a child. It is time we grow up and take responsibility for our own lives. The other day I was listening to the radio and one line caught my attention: “We don’t need another hero.” Pictures from old movies flashed in front of me. The mythological hero - tall and handsome, powerful and wise, always resourceful and with a sense of humor. Those are the heroes we searched for to lead us into the promised land of happiness. Each generation has its role models, heroes and leaders. In the past, leaders had to be charismatic, strong and confident. But as time changes we also need to change our conception of what actually is the leadership we need. Maybe we really don’t need another hero in today’s world. We were conditioned to believe that a leader is a sort of superman that comes and saves us in times of crisis and provides us with whatever we need. Hand in hand with this conditioning goes the belief that we, the ‘normal’ people, are both hopeless and helpless, and in need of constant guidance resulting from our not being able to take care of ourselves. Wake up - this is a childhood illusion! This is a view that allows you to sit waiting and hoping for a better life, a better world. It is never YOU who is powerful and it is never YOU who determines, influences and creates. We have reached the point when each one of us can and must become a leader. First we need to change our conception of what leadership is. Leadership is about empowering people to achieve their lives’ purpose. It is about creating space for people to fully express themselves. It is about encouraging people to go beyond their limits. When you empower people, you will never take away their power. They will not give it away either. Each action you take comes from choice and not because of outside influence or pressure. It is time to let go of this constant search for answers outside yourself. You have enormous wisdom within. It is a matter of making the connection with this inherent wisdom and trusting yourself to do what is right for you at any given time. It is the time for enlightened friendships, when we all share our wisdom and become both the teacher and the student. This is where our power is - in doing it together. Our planet can no longer afford for humanity to play the victim game. Look at your surroundings and notice how many people prefer to stay stuck in their victim role, refusing to recognize, acknowledge and utilize their power. Ask yourself, “What can I DO to make them see they have a choice, that they have the power?” When you have the answer, act upon it. Once you take that step - you become a leader. The world needs you!

Change your thinking, change your life
17. March 2006 by Othy.
In the world today, there are two major categories of people: the very successful and wealthy, who make up just about 2% of the world’s population, and the less successful majority who make up the remaining 98%. How come just 2% of the world is wealthy and successful? What differentiates them from everybody else? What propelled them to achieve? The answer is not far-fetched: it is their Belief System (their mindset). Belief system is the inward confidence and firm opinion that something can be done, no matter the odds or how impossible it appears. How does a mindset take shape? First, your thoughts form your thinking pattern, your habits of thinking. Your habits of thinking then form your habits of belief, called your belief system, your mindset. In other words, your thoughts shape your belief, and your belief in turn shapes the type of person that you are, your perspective and outlook on life. What this means is this: you are the kind of person you are today because you have, by your thinking pattern, formed a habit of being that type of person. Your belief system is the inward drive that takes you to your destination. It is the enabling power that materializes your thoughts. With a positive belief system, your approach to life is positive and refreshingly different; you’ll see the world around you from a different perspective. You’ll see a world of opportunities and possibilities. You suddenly become realistically optimistic which gives you an “I can do it” attitude. The ‘2%’ wish positive and think positive whereas the ‘98%’ wish positive and think negative. Faced with various monumental challenges of almost impossible proportions, 98% of the world’s population says, “it’s impossible, it has not been done before.” 2% says, “it doesn’t matter, it can be done.” 98% says, “what if you you fail.” 2% says, “what if you succeed. Failure is in not trying at all; failure is in not taking any risk at all.” 98% says, “it is too risky.” 2% says, “the risk is not trying.” 98% says, “I cannot, and won’t dare.” 2% says, “I can. I will. I do believe.” Richard Branson, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Michael Dell, Sam Walton, all these individuals belong to the 2% group. What do these men have in common? All of them had a firm belief system (a mindset) of achieving what many others considered impossible or too risky. Along the way, they encountered failures, disappointments and obstacles, but they held on. Our thoughts control our beliefs and shape our lives, if our thoughts are positive, and we believe in ourselves that we’ll become successful, we are motivated to achieve. Belief is so powerful that it defies all obstacles. Just as a positive mindset is a major force for achievement, a negative mindset is a major barrier to success. To cross-carpet from the 98% to the 2% group, your thinking pattern has to change. Change your thinking, and you will change your life. Therefore, dream big and think big, and you will achieve success in life.

Believe in yourself’
16. March 2006 by Othy.
“If we believe we can or cannot, either way, we are right.” Believing in yourself adds flavour to your soup of life. We create our reality from our thoughts, beliefs and choices. We can accomplish the impossible as long as we believe that it is possible. Nothing happens unless a firm belief precedes it. A firm belief is the foundation to every accomplishment. Beliefs are important to us because if we are determined and believe in ourselves, we can create a positive environment around us. Encourage yourself with positive statements such as “I am successful” rather than “I am a failure.” Those who succeed in life are not the ones with greater advantages, but those who firmly believe they have a position at the top, and presently see themselves in their future position. Condoleezza Rice, US Secretary of State, believed as a child that the sky was the limit as far as her future was concerned. Although she grew up in the segregated south at the peak of racism, in her was instilled the notion that there were no real limits to what she could do with her life. If she could dream it, she could achieve it, was her strong believe, etched into her by her parents. In her words: “Our parents really did have us convinced that even though I couldn’t have a hamburger at Woolworth’s, I could be President of the United States,” she told Ebony. Serving now as U.S Secretary of State, Rice has attained a lofty position of influence, one that has never before been occupied by an African-American woman. Be mindful of the fact that the universe responds to your moves. When you make a choice to move, the universe either responds with a ‘BRAVO’ or ‘OOPS, TRY AGAIN.’ But if you don’t make a move, you will never get a response. So believe, believe, believe in that unique expression of DNA designed by God, the Master Sculptor: YOU.

Confronting your fears
15. March 2006 by Othy.
It is natural for a person to monumentalize fear. Your imagination is excellent at painting a very colorful, energy-taking picture of the fearful outcome you perceive. So vivid is this portrait that it appears real. Much of what you fear is based on things that happened in the past, to you or someone else, and you imagine a similar fearful experience will happen to you in the future. Fear usually shows up in your life as worry, anxiety, restlessness, stress and tension. Living in fear is like living your life in a dark comfortable cave, afraid of the light outside. The tendency is that you do not want to get too close to the edge of the cave. This is to prevent your fears from projecting into the light. The cave becomes your small circle of comfort, known as your personal comfort zone. You know your existence to be what happens within this zone. Sometimes life extends to you an invitation to experience something new; to step outside your comfort zone. The usual reaction is to decline. Why? Because of fear: the fear of failure, rejection, humiliation, incapability, and so on. Even though your situation is far below your standard, you still hang in there because of fear. It prevents you from exploring dimensions that can lift you out of your restricted state. Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” How can you begin to experience what life outside the cave is like? How can you stop your fear in order to step outside the comfort zone for a broad and rich life experience? How can you move from the darkness of the cave into the light of reality? The answer is faith. I’m not referring to religious faith. Faith is a deliberate effort; an effort to alter what you thought to be your fate. Transforming your fears into faith is the key to living an abundantly rich, full and satisfying life. Faith means living your life with purpose. Transforming your fear into faith requires you to remember that FEAR stands for ‘False Evidence Appearing Real.’ Therefore, defy fear and its promptings; soar into places that you thought were impossible.’
