Time Management
29. April 2006 by Othy.
Whoever said, “Early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”, only got it partially right when it comes to finding the formula for personal success because great time management skills are also essential. While some people are millionaires and some people are paupers, every person is on the same playing field as regards to time. Every living being is allotted 24 hours in a single day; no more, no less. So being able to accomplish your goals in any given day means having the ability to prioritize and multi-task. If you compare any two people at a particular workplace and analyze their work habits, you’ll oftentimes notice differences in terms of their productivity. Some people are simply better at managing their time and, therefore, getting more done with the time they have. If you are not particularly good at prioritizing and managing tasks, you need not worry, because if you weren’t born with time management skills, you can learn them. Firstly, begin each new week by drawing up a schedule of things to do in the coming week. List things you absolutely must do, and things you’d like to do. Once you’ve done this, Look over your weekly schedule and consider whether, time wise, your schedule is realistic. If it isn’t, then drop off the unimportant things and maybe putting more time for the critical tasks. Something else you’ll want to consider is that people with good time management skills tend to be fairly organized. If your room looks as though it were hit by a tornado, then tidy up a little bit. You’ll be surprised at how much more efficient you’ll be if you don’t have to wade through piles of clothes to find what you’re looking for. There are a lot of advantages in Time Management and they are, reducing stress, gaining time, reducing avoidance, while promoting reviews and eliminating cramming. It also helps us to stay motivated while we avoid procrastination, and this is very important to us as Youths. The trick to successful time management is setting up goals that work, while having an awareness of those goals and prioritizing your list of goals. When you set up an effective time management plan, you are growing and upholding a personal commitment to yourself, with the ability to be more flexible. When you have a great time management plan, you are giving yourself an individual chance to, to generate a timetable that works to suit your busy caseload. When you create a good plan, you will soon find time to do all the things that matter most to you in life. In addition, when you have a good time management plan, you are saving your health. Plans have a schedule timed, which includes all the activities you are responsible to handle. Your Master Timetable should include all the most important activities you are responsible to handle. It is important that you modify this schedule according to your time changes. When you set up a Master Timetable, you will need to list the priorities first, and work your way down to the least important tasks.

Shopping!
6. April 2006 by Othy.
Shopping! Shopping! Shopping! That’s a topic of interest for most girls. They get into a store or market and shop till they drop, that’s how most girls like to spend their day. Well, what places in Lagos would most of you enjoy shopping at? For starters, there is the “Mega Plaza“ which is basically the first real big shopping mall in Lagos (though it was razed down by fire, but has since been reconstructed and reopened). What a lot of people enjoy most at Mega Plaza is its sharwama, suya and ice cream. Right now, Mega Plaza has a lot of competition on it’s hands with other cool places that people love to go to, like the “Silverbird Galleria“ in Victoria Island. I must say that the first time I went there, I thought I was in some galleria in Europe; sort of reminds you of the world-famous ”Galeries Lafayette” in Paris. Silverbird has a variety of stores and of course, some world-class cinemas, too. Some of the stores have their prices way in the skies, but altogether, it’s a unique place. Then, there is the ”The Palms Shopping Mall”, recently opened in Lekki. Gosh, the place is so nice. It’s the kind of mall you’ll find in the US or UK; 9ja is really stepping up oh! The two major stores in the Palms are ‘Shoprite’ and ’Game.’ Shoprite is a combination of a grocery store and a regular store. What’s more is that the prices are quite reasonable and affordable. There’s also a “food court” at the back where you can get all sorts of foodstuff to munch while shopping (remember, you go pay o!). The Game is a combination of several store-types rolled into one - it’s somewhere between an electronic, homegoods, cosmetics, furniture, stationery and a home improvement store. It is really a megastore. Now, the guys know we didn’t leave them out! So, if you’re looking for movies, TV screens, cell phones, Game boys, digital cameras, refrigerators, VCD’s, DVD’s and the like, the Game is the place to go. There are other small stores at the Palms such as Essenza for all you perfume freaks, clothes stores for guys, girls and little kids, Mario’s pizza & fast food, and many more. There are plans to open cinema halls in the near future; these should provide some competition for the cinema halls at the Silverbird Galleria. So, if you are looking for new places to shop, get into your car or a bus and find your way to one of these malls. You are sure to have a great time shopping till you drop.

One man’s point of view
6. April 2006 by Othy.
Can you imagine that UNILAG, regarded as the centre of excellence in learning and character, has a problem with something as mundane as its academic calendar? Presently, whereas some of the students in 300 level and above are on holidays, 100 and 200 level students are still in session, with some of them presently having exams. Consequently, these students currently in session will not be able to enjoy a holiday, as all levels are expected to resume immediately after Easter. With all work and no play, the academic performance of the 100 and 200 level students will certainly decline. Methinks that a disorganized academic calendar runs counter to a culture of excellence. Readers’ comments are welcome. Click on the Comments link below to post your reaction– Editor

The Burning Issue of Missing Results
2. April 2006 by Othy.
‘My name is Ola, a 400 level student of the department of Business Administration. During the first semester break, I went to school to check my result. Looking at the notice board, I was confident that my results were going to be great. Everyone was certain that I was going to be one of the best in my class. As I scanned through the results, expecting to see good grades, I was surprised to find out that 5 of my results were missing and my CGPA came down to 2.33 from 4.48. Imagine the pain I felt, when I found out I hadn’t failed any of these courses but had fallen victim of the ‘missing results’ problem. How about you, are you faced with a problem similar to this, what is your opinion on this?
